Earthquake Safety Research
In one of the largest-ever seismic tests, structural engineers subjected a 7-story concrete structure to mechanical shakes simulating the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The structure, built with half the steel reinforcement recommended in California building codes, survived the quake with minor cosmetic damage. more >>
Tunable Lasers
MAE professor Steven Buckley employs a relatively new type of laser intended for telecommunications to perform continuous real-time analysis of gas molecules in inhospitable industrial processes. more >>
Towards a $1,000 Genome Test
Bioengineering professor Xiaohua Huang is combining micro- and nano-fabrication technologies with high-throughput DNA analysis to develop a $1,000 genome-sequencing technology. more >>
Studying Genomes of the Sea
As UCSD alumnus Craig Venter circumnavigates the world to gather undersea microbes and data on their ecosystems, UCSD is building a computational resource to analyze the data. The work will enable studies on the effects humans are having on the environment. more >>
Powering Up the Wireless Research Agenda
UCSD researchers report world record efficiency for high-power amplifiers for cellular base stations. The November announcement came as the School's Center for Wireless Communications marked its 10th anniversary. more >>
Mushroom Networks Courting Commerce and Controversy?
UCSD engineers launched startup Mushroom Networks, Inc., which is beta testing a wireless device that creates local ad-hoc networks for peer-to-peer resource sharing of Internet bandwidth. more >>
